Safety Effectiveness of Integrated Risk Reduction Strategies for Rail Transport of Hazardous Materials

In addition, there has been relatively little study of the variability in the effectiveness of risk reduction strategies under different operating conditions. This study represents the first step in a systematic process of quantitative risk analysis, with the ultimate goal of optimizing the integration of risk reduction strategies. A generic framework for railroad hazmat transportation risk analysis is introduced. Next, basic strategies for reducing accidentcaused hazmat release risk are identified. Then quantitative models are developed to estimate the effectiveness of various risk reduction strategies, individually and in combination, under different operating conditions.
